Westman Immigrant Services depends on volunteers to enhance its services to newcomers. With your help, newcomers can take steps to successfully adapt and integrate into Canadian society. Volunteering is also a great way for newcomers to gain experience in a Canadian workplace, network, and gain a reference for future job applications.
If you are patient, compassionate, and are interested in a cross-cultural experience: a volunteer opportunity at WIS may be right for you! Ability to speak a language other than English is not required. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.
Volunteers are needed for the following areas:
Settlement Partnerships – 1-2 hour weekly, flexible commitment for at least 3 months; practice English skills with a newcomer, direct newcomers to available resources, provide friendship & support, introduce newcomers to our community.
English Classroom Assistant – commitment of 2 to 2.5 hours once per week; provide support to classroom teacher, model English language for learners, and assist with classroom activities. Morning, afternoon, evening and Saturday morning shifts available.
Conversation Circle Facilitator – 2 hour weekly commitment; lead a group discussion to allow newcomers to practice conversational English and learn about our community
Care for Newcomer Children Program Assistant – 2 hour weekly commitment; help with the preparation and delivery of children’s activities for children aged 1 to 10, assist in administrative and cleaning duties for WIS Kid’s Corner
Spring Break Volunteer for Youth Program (March 27-31) Shifts are 9am - 4pm (can do an all day shift or morning or afternoon) helping to lead childern's activities for childern ages 6-12
