Open art jam

We are creating community space, open to anyone who would like to create art in an open space with other artists. You are welcome to join us, and your friends.

Bring some supplies and your creative insights at any time after 6pm, for a casual come and go event. Some people are interested in bringing potluck things for sharing. Some people are interested in doing acro yoga. Others want to create art.

Donations to the community centres renovation projects will be accepted, but not expected. The focus here is on the creation of good things.

Don't worry if your not able to make it all night, or work late. Your not alone. We are talking about the potential of creating a similar space on a monthly or semi monthly basis.

Where did Sadie Hawkins dances originate from?

In the days LONG before eHarmony and Match.com . . .

The comic strip "Li'l Abner" featured the fictional town of "Dogpatch", and the very undesirable daughter of old Hekzebiah Hawkins,     namely Sadie (Hawkins):

When no suitors came calling on poor old Sadie, her "Pappy" created           a special day when all the bachelors in town were gathered,                      and they would have a footrace, wherein she could            "catch herself a man" . . .

"Th' one she ketches'll be her husbin''

This tradition apparently continued every year after that,                      at least in Dogpatch, so single girls could try to get their guy!

Since the late 1930's in North America, it's common for                                                    girls to invite the guys to a Sadie Hawkins Dance.                                                             Or at least invite them onto the dance floor.

And pin a wacky homemade corsage on them, the bigger the better,            to show how much they care!

Artist Vivek Shraya will discuss how she uses art to explore and celebrate racialized femininity. Focusing on her new EP “Part-Time Woman” with the Queer Songbook Orchestra, Shraya will pose both question and critique: What defines woman?

Vivek Shraya is a Toronto-based artist whose body of work includes several albums, films, and books. Her first book of poetry, even this page is white, won a 2017 Publisher Triangle Award and was longlisted for CBC’s Canada Reads. Her debut novel, She of the Mountains, was named one of The Globe and Mail’s Best Books, and her first children’s picture book, The Boy & the Bindi, was featured on the National Post Bestseller List. Vivek has read and performed internationally at shows, festivals and post-secondary institutions, including sharing the stage with Tegan & Sara. She is one half of the music duo Too Attached and the founder of the publishing imprint VS. Books. A four-time Lambda Literary Award finalist, Vivek was a 2016 Pride Toronto Grand Marshal, and has received honours from Toronto Arts Foundation and The Writers’ Trust of Canada.

Gifts needed to help less fortunate Westman children

Gifts needed to help less fortunate Westman children

BRANDON:   Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba is asking the public to help Westman children in need during the 2017 holiday season.

“Many children will be without a gift at all this year unless we can all open our hearts and wallets to help,” said Susan Cable, Community Education Coordinator.

“We know that in the past the Brandon and Westman communities have been very generous in donating gifts for us to give to these kids.

“Our hope is that we can count on the public again to come through for us.”

CFS Western is very grateful to Brandon and Westman shoppers for their many years of past support. This year, new unwrapped gifts for boys and girls aged newborn to 17 can be dropped off for the Gift Tree at the front reception desks at:

  • 800 McTavish Avenue, Brandon, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

  • Elspeth Reid Family Resource Centre, 255 -9th Street, Brandon, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

Both locations will accept gift donations until 4:30 pm, Friday, December 15.

“This is a chance for people to really show their spirit of giving for a child who may otherwise not receive a Christmas gift at all this year,” said Cable, “and to help others and bring families in need priceless smiles and laughter.

“What a wonderful way to truly show the real magic of the season to children less fortunate!”
