7th Annual YWCA Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

It's time to "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes"!

This year the YWCA Brandon is doing things a little differently!

We are asking Women and Men to "walk a mile in her shoes" 200 walkers to raise $250 each.

We recognize that domestic violence and homelessness can affect anyone so that is why we would like to invite everyone in the community, not just men, to partake in raising awareness for this serious issue.

Register now to participate in the walk and help us raise $50,000 to sustain the essential programs and services of the YWCA Brandon and Westman Women's Shelter.

Register online ywcabrandon.com, or call 204-571-3680

The Men Behind the Music: Genius &; Drama

They are known as the biggest musical geniuses of all time. Centuries after their death, scholars are still studying their compositions, musicians are still learning their music. But who were these men? What did people think of them when they were alive? And what inspired them so much that they were driven to write music that seems to have made them immortal?

"Brilliant, creative & unique...an event not to be missed."

Tickets available at www.brownpapertickets.com

The Men Behind the Music is a concert production created by Yale-educated flutist Haley Marie, who is inspired by the possibility of creating a new way for audiences to experience classical music. Film segments are used instead of program notes to introduce audiences to the world in which some of the most famous classical pieces were written, giving audiences a glimpse into the dramatic and often surprising history behind the music that will be performed.

Freedom of the City

The public is invited to attend the ceremony marking the granting of the "Freedom of the City" to CFB Shilo. The event will start with soldiers marching along Victoria Avenue from the Brandon Armoury (11th and Victoria) to City Hall. The military parade will include vintage vehicles from the RCA Museum. The formal ceremony will take place along 9th Street in front of City Hall.

The granting of the Freedom of the City is a traditional means for a municipality to honour a unit of the Canadian Forces. It had its beginning in medieval Europe, when cities were walled and the citizens looked to their defences at the approach of a threatening army. When the force was friendly, however, it was permitted to pass into or through the city without first being required to disarm; that is, with bayonets fixed, colours flying and drums beating.

During the ceremony the unit will march toward city hall, in column of route, bayonets fixed and carrying Colours. As the unit approaches city hall, the chief constable stands in the centre of the road to bar the unit from proceeding further. The chief constable challenges the unit on its identity and the commanding officer responds with the unit’s title. The chief constable then calls for the unit to “Advance one and be recognized”.

The commanding officer, accompanied by the chief constable then marches to the door to city hall. The commanding officer knocks on the door three times with the pommel of his sword. The mayor opens the door and the commanding officer declares his name and that of the unit. The mayor, accompanied by the city council, forms up near the entrance to city hall. The mayor then reads the proclamation, welcoming the unit, inspects the troops, and invites it to exercise its freedom.
