Ice Fishing Pelican Lake

Anyone been out to Pelican?
Hows the ice and water?
Hows the bite? What is Biting?

I have NEVER fished Pelican, summer or winter. Thinking we are going to try it out tomorrow for a change of scenery..... Looking for tips, anything would be helpful as I have never fished it!

Lake access spots to drive out.... Areas to fish.... bait.... tactics..... anything would help!

Perch? Walleye? Pike? What should we expect?

Thanks! And good luck to anyone going out this weekend!

pelican lake

A few of us are heading out tomorrow as well. I haven't been there this year yet but heard the perch are biting. I drive out at the terry fox park by the yacht club in Ninette. I'll be in touch with the other guys later today so when I find out more info I can pass it along.

.

Was out Christmas Eve around 3-5 and they were biting good. Mostly perch and a couple small pickeral. Lots of other shacks had 4 or more perch outside on the ice. Was our first time out there too so we set up on the north side of all the other shacks by the yacht club.
And FYI, Ninette only sells frozen minnows

pelican lake

We are planning a fishing derby at Pelican Lake in March, and so far this winter we have had reports of great fishing!...I've posted some pictures of the fish people have been catching on our website. www.healthylake.ca, click on the 'fishing derby' link and scroll down the page. Happy fishing!

Good day!

Had a great day Sunday @ Pelican! Wind was blowing but weather was warm!

Lots of Perch!!! Nice ones too! Yummy!

Some nice walleye for sure, but no where near catching our limits.

Lets Talk Jack Fish @ Pelican.

I will try and upload pics, but anyone catch pike with disgusting growths on them???

That cannot be good! Hoping it doesn't effect other species too!

Jack Fish

Pics are up of what I am talking about.......

We got a few decent pikes out of the ice, and none had this. The guy Fishing beside us said pretty well everyone he caught did. These we're his catches. (the walleye n perch were ours)

W.T.F????????? Anyone know whats going on with that?? Its not from being attacked by bigger pike, its a growth or tumor or something!

You seen that lake in the summer time? It is disgusting. Pretty self explanitory if you've seen the water in summer and the abnormal fish your pulling out

Y point

Y point is about the middle of the lake on the west side. Strathcona park. FishinAddict, where were you fishing on Sunday? We were out at manhattan beach and we didn't have that much luck with the perch. None of the jacks we caught looked like yours did. Group of 10 of us and we kept 1 pickeral, 6 jack and I think 7 perch.

Please don't eat the fish. There's warnings all around to not even swim in the water because of the Disease causing bacteria and links to MS.

How come I have been fishing there a couple times now and have not seen anything? Where are all these warnings?

Jack

We caught a Jack on Saturday that had this as well. Added another pic ... It's not quite as pronounced as yours. We just thought something tried to take a bite of him. Cleaned "him" and put "him" in the freezer. It's a good thing we didn't cook it right up!

I had no idea about this? Has Conservation been advised?

We were out at Manhattan beach also. I ended walking out farther from the massive line of trucks and shacks. We sat in line for a bit, didn't get a bite so I grabbed auger walked out another 150 yards, drilled 2 holes and started catching right away. So we hung out there and cleaned up the rest of the afternoon. Our partners that remained in the "Village" didn't get near as many as us 3.

I haven't reported the pike at all to the powers at be, they weren't my catches, some one right near us was catching them liek that. Our pike were all clean.

Eating outta pelican- I just had a perch n pickerel fry last night with sundays catch. DELICIOUS!

I will update if I die from some disease from it. Heres hoping I don't. - I did not see any warning signs either...... about not eating the fish.

The pike in the pictures (infected ones)

Were caught out from the beach at the marina/yacht club. About 100 yards from shore, 300 yards from the aerator.

Bean-

Yah that looks like it!

So its probably not from the water? or atleast not affecting other species.... thats good. I guess. Still gross.

Yacht club

Was out there this morning around 7 till 10:00. Caught 25 perch but only kept 5 good ones. Was about 200 yards NE of the entrance.

Lake Water Quality

You would likely have seen the sign (attached a picture) in the summer if you went to Pelican Lake. I have no idea if it effects the water quality at lower temperatures or the fish but I would be tempted not to eat the fish from a lake that you can walk on in summer and winter

What's the access like to get on pelican after the winds on Thursday? Is it accessible by 4x4 still?

Been going to pelican lake since our family cottage is there, for the past 20 years. I fish every weekend there in the summer and I try to get out ice fishing there in the winter as much as I can. Not once have I caught a pike, seen or heard of one with this disease.

This condition in the fish is caused by a virus

See this website:/srd.alberta.ca/fishwildlife/WildlifeDiseases/documents/Skin_tumors_fish.pdf

fairly common in most lakes in winter due to stress conditions and sometimes poorer water quality.
