Cell phone contract ending soon.

My cell contract is ending soon and I’ve been thinking about switching providers. I want to stream music from Apple Music and other online music providers but I need the data to do so without going over on a regular basis and it costing me a small fortune. Are there any cell providers that have unlimited data?

MTS

I believe MTS is the only one that still offers it. However. I stream a lot of music and I have an unlimited plan and am usually only at the 15-16 GB's of usage for the month. The easiest for you is to monitor what your usage is monthly and get a plan that fits accordingly.

"only" 15-16GB of usage. Considering most providers offer a max of 6-8GB before going to a "family" plan I'd say that you're doing pretty good for data usage :-P

Depending on the provider I've seen the plans, for a single person, range from 1 GB to 350GB per month. You don't need a family or multiple phones to get large data packages. BellMTS is the best value for your data but after 15GB you will get a throttled down data speed.

Data

Good time to be wanting data in Manitoba.

You'll want to talk to individual providers to sort out their best option for you, but from a quick glance at provider sites here's what I gather:

BellMts: gives unlimited Manitoba-wide data on their $80/month plan
Telus: 15GB + 1 more bonus GB on their $70/month
Rogers: 15GB on their $75/month

Some providers will have loyalty options, and so if your contract is coming up it would be worth talking to "retentions" at your current provider to ask them what they can offer to keep your business.

All that said, you might have monitored your data usage but video is your major bandwidth hog. If streaming music it wont ramp up anywhere near as fast. From the link below, for Apple Music "If you stream one hour of music per day, you’ll average around 1.2GB of data per month."  (though they note that they turned off the highest quality option in settings)

Depending on the type of cellphone you own, you can tell about how much data you''ve used over a period of x months, if the usage is only of that month, then you should compare to the data rate plans at all the competitors. However, if you''re ranging more than 15GB/month every single month, Bell MTS Flat Rate data may be good.

Even with BellMTS/Telus (those who were moved over FROM MTS) unlimited data usage, I find the average user only uses 1.5-2GB of data per month, but there are the people who don''t have home internet and use their cell for everything so THEN it makes sense, but unfortunately after 15GB of usage the speeds generally get throttled to dialup (but not always).

I''m on Rogers and happened to find special plans at random times, I know I''d be happy enough with 6GB plan, but when I signed up they only had a 5GB and then a 10GB apparently, so I went with 10GB, and then they offered a 12GB for same price, no contract changes, then a month and a half ago Rogers had a promo just for a few days where they''d double the data of the regular plan, so now I''m on a 20GB plan for $80, when in reality I''d likely be satisfied with a 5-6GB plan, but the upside is that after 15GB it''s still unthrottled!

Lastly, best promo right now is if you bring your own cellphone over from your previous carrier (make sure they unlock it for you), Koodo has a plan with 8GB per month, unlimited Canadian calling and Texting for $45, 8GB is generally most than what most use. I assume Fido or one of the other competitors will be competing on it soon

Data

If you decided unlimited data was what you were looking for, hope you managed to slide in before this dropped.... Bell MTS is no longer offering unlimited data to new customers:
