We have bought our last several (used) cars for cash. Then we "pay" ourselves a bit each month to use for repairs as needed. When we crunched the numbers, we almost always come out ahead of what we would have made in payments by a 2:1 margin even when we've had to do a lot of repairs.
By the time the cars start to cost too much to repair (i.e. we could buy a new one) or start needing signficant amount of work beyond routine stuff to keep it safe, we just get a new one, but we can generally get years and years of service out of it before we get to that point. Most cars on the road have 50-75% of their life left.
As for where, we've bought from brokers, privately off Kijiji, and from various dealerships over the years. They have all been good experiences, but it also requires patience. We have looked for the "just right" vehicle for over 6 months in some cases before making a purchase to find one that ticks all the boxes.
I know that's not exactly what you're looking for, but I thought I would offer that perspective as you decide on this big purchase! Good luck with your car hunt!
