Esso on Richmond closing

On March 29, the Esso on Richmond will be closing according to the sign they have out front. Really hope Esso doesn't leave it like their station on Rosser. Especially since this location is on prime real estate.

.

I thought there was some sort of law either provincially or perhaps municipally that all closed stations have to remove their tanks now?

Edit: Found it.

That only leaves the Esso on the hill in Brandon. It wasn't too long ago that that station switched from FasGas as well.

It seems Esso is the only one mothballing their gas stations in Brandon as well. 22nd and Vic and the one on Rosser were both Esso too. I wonder why the other stations remain viable but Esso cannot?

Think in

Brandon, the bylaw applies to gas stations built after the bylaw passed, when they are going to close and no longer be a gas station, the land must be remediationed. Don't think it applies to gas stations built prior.

Think this station was built prior.

I can't find the actual bylaw but I sort of thought it read as stations that had closed down prior to it are grandfathered over. New closures were subject to clean up though.
Seven years is a long time though so I can't say for sure.

Yup closing

It will be cleaned up and a Plaza similar to the west of it will be made to replace the property.

I believe when I see it. Speaking of which, any word when Esso will be forced to clean up their eyesore former location on Rosser?!?!?!?

Good, I'm still annoyed that they switched branding and negated all my fasgas points without any other local option available. I haven't filled up there since they switched.

odd that

they bought out fas gas then promptly shut down.

personally I like filling at the Coops, membership credits and a friendly face to fill the tank and clean the windshields for you.

kinda like the old days, mind you, they used to wipe your windshield with the same dirty rag they checked your oil with.

any one remember those days.

To my knowledge, Fasgas wasn't doing great. They thought maybe changing their signage to a known gas company would show an increase in sales. However, it didn't. So they pulled the plug. The owner (I think from Calgary), sold it (as far as I know).

Personally, I never filled at Fasgas ever. Mind you I never have filled at the Richmond co-op either, and both are the closest gas station to my house.

Closure

First thought with any business closure goes to jobs that folks have working at that place. Hopefully there are opportunities at the other Esso so that nobody is out of work for very long!

Second thought in this case goes back to when it was Fas Gas and how handy it was for a guy with a camera to have two gas stations right next to each other when one of them raised their prices first:

I'm sure much more to it, but competitively speaking one thing that had to be tough was being next to Co-op gas bar when Co-op still gives free air. If I was in that immediate area and needed to top up I'd find myself going to Co-op 10 times out of 10 for that very reason.

All the best to staff and management in whatever comes next.

Fas Gas - Esso

Does anyone happen to know when it was that Fas Gas changed to Esso? I'm having a disagreement with someone in regards to the time frame. Lol.

small

It was just too small if you got two or more cars in there, there was not much in the store - all you had to do was look east and see a great service station, with lots of room, great service and a nice store.
