All around

Assiniboine has pickerel. Rivers, oak lake, sandy lake, lake audy, little jack fish lake. Tons of lakes around here that have pickerel. Just gotta know how to catch them

I heard the shore was lined with walleye this spring. To bad. Also heard that Sandy lake was getting pretty green already

better off

To head north if you want good tasting fish. Everything in the south is garbage to me.

River walleye

I've caught several walleye in the Assiniboine. They all looked a little pale but otherwise healthy. Maybe 2 pounders. They tasted awesome! The only bad walleye I've had were the bigger ones. Those taste a little strong, in my opinion. I also feel like don't get enough credit as table fair. Again, in my opinion, they are the reverse of walleye. The bigger they are, the better tasting! Good luck in your fishing!

Soak

the fillets in salt water over night in fridge. Takes the strong taste out and pulls the blood out, works on any fish. You can also boil catfish fillets before frying them up, it pulls the oils out and makes them delicious!

A lot of people think the Master Angler program is only for submitting photos of fish... but its also a great way to find out where people are CATCHING the fish too ->: https://anglers.travelmanitoba.com/

Great way to find lakes to fish

blood out

The best way to get the blood out of the fish is to cut them right under the gills. They bleed out nicely and there is no mess when cleaning them.

Bleed them

Yes. It's amazing how whiter a walleye fillet is on one that has been bleed compared to one that hasn't! Chiko. I've caught some really nice looking channel cats in the Assiniboine and always wanted to try one, but chickened out. Aside from soaking in salt, how do you cook them? I always heard they can be mushy. Thanks!

deep fry

350 degree oil. Use a beer batter. I always spice my fish first. Then put them in flour then into the beer batter then into the oil.

It is key to have a thermostat on your oil. You dont it want it to be to cold or to hot. 350-370 tops is perfect.

Good tip

Thanks for the cooking tip. A guy I talked to at a hardware store says he has a small deep fryer dedicated for catfish. I've had it in the States and enjoyed it.
