Chokecherry season

Not sure about all areas but choke cherries still seem to be a few weeks off. There might be the odd person that does have some, but if it's like our place it dissapears quickly.

They are still green in our area.

chokecherry syrup

Man, I sure wish I could pick some chokecherries!! We grew up on the stuff out at the farm.

Lots of the fruits seem a week or two late this year.

Cherries

Not chokecherries but a sample off of our Evans was already edible yesterday. Another week or two and should hopefully be able to slide in and pick them at best-case scenario before fruit flies (maybe?) show up. Not sure if exactly what you’d be looking for but they do make a nice syrup. Ours isn’t quite at full maturity yet but a full sized tree usually produces a ton.... if these might do the trick for you it wouldn’t hurt to put a wanted ad up now to get dibs on any tree whose owner doesn’t have plans for!

Farmer’s Market

Might it appear eventually at a farmer’s market here in town?

I have never had syrup but love choke cherries. Sounds like it could be a small business venture for someone with some bushes.

I would buy some.

I'm not sure your cherries would work the same. Chokecherries remind me more of saskatoons (although not as sweet - ha ha ha that's an understandstatement!), but are a deep, deep, deep purple that stains absolutely everything.

While we're on the topic, I also miss pincherry jelly.

Chockcherry syrup and jelly

Tender cuts on 18th street has some of both.
Rather expensive but if you're willing to pay they do have some. The syrup was $8.00 for think approx 500ml bottle, but sure its good and is made in Manitoba. Check it out.

If you watch the buy and sell sites on Facebook you will often see jams and jellies available. Try a post there.

How can you love raw chokecherries? They are so bitter. They definitely make great syrup and jelly.
