Tornado touchdown in Alonsa

A tornado touched down near Alonsa earlier this evening. It apparently did some damage.

Tornado

Had the emergency alerts on tv all the way down in Brandon. With some of the pictures of what it was capable of, thankfully havent read any reports of any injuries as of now.

This radar loop really puts into perspective how quickly you can go from developing storm to what it became:

2 cabins n trailers

Have family that narrowly escaped the tornado around 9pm last night

2 family cabins destroyed plus various trailers left upside down and some in the lake.

Very spotty cell service in that area. Still can only rely on AM radio in spots in the province.

No reports last night of any injuries. Will be lots of reports coming out today I’m sure

Pretty sad

I can't get over how many storms we get with summers now, and tornados.....I dont remember so many of either when younger.... A lady said there wasnt cell service for awhile, why didnt the cell provider fix that awhile ago?
That poor elderly guy who passed who lived alone, and glad the other couple were ok and nice that everyone helped each other.

I think it's in part awareness. I can remember being out at the farm when I was a kid (south of Neepawa, close to Brookdale, was the RM of Langruth back then, not sure what it is now) and we had no TV, and the radio was perpetually tuned into the Portage radio station. We had no weather reports, nothing that would tell us what was going on besides the Portage weather.

My grandmother would go outside in the morning and be, "the smoke is doing this, the leaves are turning over, the birds are blah blah blah..." and she always knew when bad weather was coming. We had so many bad storms out there growing up... what we have now pales to them on the most part IMO.

But now we have media reports, weather warnings on radios, cell phones, twitter reports, everything that makes us uber-aware of these events as soon as they happened. So yeah, it seems like more, but it's not significantly more.

awareness part 2

I also want to remind everyone not the rely on media, weather reports, cell service, etc for their weather.

Don't wait for a warning to be issued to seek shelter and/or take preparatory steps if you feel threatened. Know the warning signs, be aware, and take action, with or without a weather warning.

EF4

After being intially classed at as EF3, Environment Canada has upgraded the tornado to an EF4. Apparently, it's the strongest tornado recorded in North American so far this year - even in the US they've only had up to EF3's.
