What insect does this?

Two of my kids & I have had a little round hole (3-4 mm or so?) cut/bitten/something into our skin today, all at various times of day. I actually have 2 right close together. None of us heard/saw any insect, felt any bite/sting, and each of us were suddenly bleeding quite a lot from the small mysterious wounds. We find it strange, but of course fascinating, and are wondering if anyone has had this happen to them lately as well?
I am quite sensitive to even the smallest of mosquito pokes, so that is why this is baffling. It certainly was not a horse fly!
Any help identifying the perpetrator would be great!

Just an opinion

Black flies

Sound like what you're describing.
You don't always feel them bite and they often take chunks and area bleeds.

Definitely black flies or sand flies. They don't suck up blood, the lap it up. And OMG they are itchy afterwards!!

That is interesting. It could be...but nobody here is itching? Does that vary from person to person? And with black flies, I thought they liked to be in swarms/clouds of them.
I also was wondering why we have never had these bite before now. There is no sand here, so I would tend to less then toward black flies. We have lived here for years, I have had absolutely no experience with them before.
What conditions do they usually favor? I am just curious why now and not other years?

Are a favourite target for sand and black flies.

Sites were elbow & lower leg.
We have seen sand flies before, but not here. Highly doubting they are sand flies.

Maybe horse flies or bot flies, sometimes you feel them bites sometimes you don’t.
