How long are pipeliners staying?

Has anybody heard how long pipeliners will be in Brandon? Its great for people to make a bit of extra money by renting rooms, but is sure making it difficult to assist people with low income to find housing. Have you seen people renting a one bedroom basement suite for $2500/month or trying to rent out their living room (not bedroom) for $350/month? This is getting a bit crazy.

supply and demand

From what I’m told by a few guys that I know who are working around here is they should be gone by mid November if all goes well. I know most of them are in hotels but yes in a jam they will rent rooms. Seen an ad for a room to rent for 900 a month . That’s cheaper then a hotel per day . As for low income housing.. well that’s been a problem long before they arrived . So 900-1000 for a room seems good to me even better if they have access to a kitchen . Would save them money by not having to eat out as much . But being an oilfield worker most companies will reimburse the workers for food and rent . I get 40 dollars a day untaxed for meals and 750 a month depending where I work. In B.C. I get 1000 a month for living expenses .

Pipeliners

Some pipeliners are in Brandon till Dec. 22nd,
Depends if they are with Bannister, or Somerville and which part of the pipeline they are working on .

Some renters are overcharging just because they are pipeliners

Pipeliners

Its too bad that people coming into the area and generating thousands apon thousands of dollars into the local economy have to get so gouged on a place to stay. Most of these guys do not work full time...every couple of years for 3-4 months. Its shameful to charge someone 2500.00 for a 1 bedroom basement suite. That is embarrassing to say the least. Karma is you know what...I hope it bites these people as bad as they are taking it right now. Not everyone looking for a place to stay works the pipeline. There are lots of students and other workers coming to town for different reasons.

And some work a heck of a lot more than that. Do you realize how much money their is in the oilfields? Wages are pretty good plus living allowance. If you can take part of some of the riches why not?

I'd guess sommerville to be done around xmas or shortly there after, weather depending. This rain/snow of late has delayed things a touch. But they appear to have made more progress than banister from what I have seen.

experience

I moved here from Estevan a few years ago...and while we were waiting for our house to sell we rented the rooms in our house. We owned a large house with 5 bedrooms...we charged what we thought was fair...certainly nowhere near $900 per room! That’s insane!
