just went through this...

Home Building Centre has lots more to choose from, but Jenkins and Home Depot also had a fair selection.

How to choose a quality product

Also looking for vinyl plank. Can anyone recommend a brand they are happy with in their home. What to look for as far as thickness and wear layer? Does it easily scratch?

Kellington floors

Stop in and see them. We had something in mind and the owner talked us out of it, with very good reasons we had not thought about. What he thought we should get, we did and it is beautiful.

They have just moved from 6th street to 13th Street, near Jack's Maytag.

I would be interested to know what kind of product you ended up with. Been thinking of vinyl plank for a bedroom and a bathroom to be done before Christmas. Would like a personal review of what is out there.

Some advice from someone who works with this stuff. Stick to linoleum for wet areas as they are ACTUALLY waterproof. Vinyl plank is advertised as waterproof but in reality they form small gaps which allows water to penetrate and damage the glue or subfloor.

I've had more than one flooring store tell me vinyl planking will not be a problem in the bathroom, so this is not good to hear. Pm me if you are willing to share more info on this topic. Would appreciate hearing more. Why does the product claim to be 100% waterproof?

The product is waterproof yes. You can take a plank and submerged it and it’s fine. The issue is the glue. When the planks are installed there are always gonna be very small gaps that would allow the water to penetrate to the subfloor and adhesive. That is where the issues would occur. The adhesive may let go or deteriorate then the planks would pop off. I always question it or suggest sheet goods in wet areas for that reason.

I was with the understanding that it was not glued down when installed. I also did not think water would be able to get between the planks as they lock together. I was also under the impression you could safely wash it using a mop and pail of water.

You are correct for the most part. It does depend on the product of course. I was more thinking of the plank that is like a VCT in which the floor is glued and tiles or planks are placed directly into a tacky glue. But yes there are also a sticky tab system which the tab is revealed and planks overlap the tab and they stick together and the plank system which interlock together just like a laminate system. Both those methods would likely hold up to water if they are a true waterproof plank system.
I have done a lot of floors in wet areas in the last few years with the glued plank method and have had a few callbacks due to issues after some flooding. But since plank is still a relatively new system I’m sure when it comes time to replace bathrooms and stuff there will be signs of water damage on the glued systems we have been doing where if a linoleum was used there would be no signs of water damage.
It all depends which product gets used in all applications though.
