Better gas up!

Largest refinery in Canada is on fire. Pump prices will likely go up right away.

Hi

What would cause it to go up in flame like that? Aside from oil is flamable lol I dont know much on that stuff so just asking...and why would prices go up on gas doesnt Canada have more than one refinery?

I suspect in that process a lot of volatile vapour is produced, but normally under pressure and contained in pipes. Most probably a release of vapour, which, once mixed with air, can ignite the big vapour cloud. I worked in a refinery out west years ago.

Would that be something. An oil refinery which gets unethical oil from Saudi et al and not a single drop Canadian oil be responsible for a price increase?

By the way, don't complain too badly with the gas prices in Brandon. I saw it as high as 1.30 per liter at a tourist trap gas station in The Pas (Michaels) when I was there for Thanksgiving Weekend.

It'll be up over $1.30 by next weekend.

I thought most gas stations get their fuel from over seas/USA. Wasn’t co-op only actually Canadian made fuel?
If true makes you wonder why they charge same rates as gas that has to be imported....

to the Brandon Sun the refinery was mostly already shut down for maintenance so just an excuse to increase prices

Maintenance

Those mega refineries never really "shutdown". They'll shut a section down for routine maintenance (usually have a redundant section they can swing to) so production may be reduced, not stopped. With 3000 people on site as the news reported, I would say they had a very large maintenance group performing work. That's how it was done back in the day out west.

It is 107.9 at shell in the corral centre. But Florida May get a hurricane so it should go up 20 cents soon.

FWIW almost 40% capacity lost yesterday in Gulf of Mexico as Cat 4 (maybe even Cat 5) Michael plows through...

That is just what normally happens when a disaster strikes the Gulf of Mexico

How is that possible?

I saw gas at Huskey today at 1.04! Safeway dropped to 1.06, the rest were still at 1.07. Are you saying gas jumped that high within hours?

It’s still at 1.07 most places. I’m guessing the big jump will be there in the morning.

This poster said S/Store is at 124.9 tonight.
Regardless, we should all gas up early if this is the case!

124.9

Gas has jumped to 124.6 at some stations in Winnipeg according to GasBuddy so that’s probably why it’s going up here

Gas

If you think a refinery explosion or hurricane could pull prices up, look out out for USA/Saudi political tensions if anything comes of them ...  this article makes the case for oil to run up past $100-200+!

Interesting article

This article was in the Calgary Herald and have a bit of information on the discounts. There is a lot of noise being made about pipeline capacity and rising Canadian oil supply, the one number that seems to be hard to find is Canadian deliveries of crude to the US.
In the last few years the laws regarding the selling of crude oil were changed in the US, and it would be interesting to know how much of our cheap Canadian oil is being blended and sold on the international market.
