it got bad REALLY fast!

I drove over it last night - didn't see the depression in the road, but sure felt it! It scared the crap out of me then! This morning at about 8 it was blocked off and about 3 feet around & a foot deep - just cracked though. I saw the picture of it just totally collapsed now. Now I can picture how these things can swallow a small car so quickly! :-o

sinkhole

When I drove past it looked like it was undermined pretty good, so it may get bigger yet!

BTW

It's at 1st & Lorne heading south, and the left-hand lane is blocked off. Just thought I'd clarify!

1st st

Glad nobody looks to be hurt... it has to be about the length/width/depth to be able to swallow a small car. Added a few pictures, will upload a small cell phone video shortly.

Cause

Councillor Jeff Fawcett has shared this:

"First Street and Lorne Avenue, there was a watermain break under the road that was undetected until a portion of the street collapsed. Staff have ensured that the open lane is structurally safe for travel but are looking at options to restrict truck traffic. Crews will begin work to fix the watermain break at their earliest opportunity.

Update

Sewer and water has sent out the note below:

" Please be advised that the southbound lane of 1st Street from Kirkcaldy Dr to Victoria Ave will be closed at 1:00 pm, Friday March 21st, 2013 and will re-open at 10:00pm, due to a Water Main break, this will be a full road closure. Please watch for signs and drive with care and caution. "

... along with the following added note:
"If safety concerns exist for Northbound traffic, it may become necessary to divert traffic at 1st & Victoria. Please watch for traffic signs in this area and avoid 1st Street for any business or travels if possible during this construction."

Closure

Wonder if that''s more meant for larger trucks. Are smaller vehicles being allowed to continue southbound to get to Princess, Pacific, Rosser East?

Can't Turn onto 1st from Kircaldy

The turning lane is blocked on 1st turning South onto Kirkcaldy and traffic is backed up horribly trying to go back West on Kirkcaldy to 18th.

Why are they blocking it way up there if the sink hole is so far down. Made me very late for work!!!!

No idea because I just drove down first st five minutes ago north bound is down to one lane between Louise and Princess Ave and south bound is closed off in that same section but other than that it's business as usual.

Yesterday

It was like that when we drove over it at 5 pm yesterday but was worse when we drove over it at 10 pm last night so we called the City when we got home last night to let them know that there was probably a sink hole developing there

,,,

Doesn't make any sense to close traffic all the way from kirk when the sink hole is at Lorne! Pretty silly when that is a busy road! Would've made sense to open fr Kirk to princess and than close it from Lorne to Louise!

Pretty much, there's three streets from Kirk to Princess, You can go west on Pacific, East on Rosser or East/West at princess, three of those four routes leader to feeder streets anyways and all of them lead to Victoria. Bottle necking traffic all to 18th or the by-passes is ridiculous. All afternoon it was blocked from Princess to Lorne I anticipated North bound on first closing in the same section but to shut it down from Vic to Kirk is insane.

Yup and if there is a medical emergency down around the kirkcaldy area... They're screwed!!!!! Traffic is really bad, is BPS not at 18th diverting more traffic to help this out?

It's not the result of a pot hole, it's a water main break. Water mains break all the time, it's hard to fault anyone for that.

I wouldn't be surprised if more of them show up, there may be water main breaks that haven

continue

Shown up because of the frost, and if erosion has taken place then it is just a matter of time.

I understand

That they need to divert heavy truck traffic away from downtown but blocking all traffic a mile back seems a tad excessive.

it may seem

A tad excessive but in all honesty people are stupid when it comes to slowing down a touch to "see what's going on". The city probably wants to remove the liability risk of having too many "sightseers" in the area. If the city warned people to stay out of the area it would be the same situation as was the case around the sandbags near the Corral Center 3 years ago. People just don't know when to listen and stay clear therefore the area is closed. Just my thoughts tho.

Update

An update was sent out late afternoon that indicated that for safety reasons, Northbound traffic on 1st between Victoria and Princess will be closed starting at 5 and until watermain repair work is done.

Yes, it's still closed.

I think this is going to take a while to fix. It's not going to be a patch up job.

.....

Wouldn't they just bring out the usual pot hole sprayer and patch it? Little tar and rock sprayed in there and it is good as new, no? Lol.

Filled

Its filled in. Traffic going both ways, but of course just one lane Southbound for a bit while you go past the former hole. Added a couple pics to show where things are at.
