NEW Green Acres School Playground

The new Green Acres school playground is being installed this week, and we are in need of volunteers to help! Even as little as an hour of your time will be a huge help and very much appreciated!

Assembly of the playground begins at 9 am on Thursday (August 14th) and will continue through Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the playground is complete.

Whether you are a resident of Green Acres, a past Green Acres alum, have children in the area, or are just a person looking to help, all volunteers would be a tremendous asset and very much appreciated!

Child Care for Volunteers

It is not logical to pay for a babysitter so a parent can do volunteer work.

If you are in this position, I may be able to volunteer to look after the younger children in a safe area while the parent(s) work on the playground. Send me a message or post on this thread if you would volunteer to build if someone will watch your child for an hour or two.

I am busy on Thursday but could be available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If there is someone who feels they are not physically able to help with the build but would like to help me supervise some children of the volunteers, send me a message or post on this thread. I have sidewalk chalk and can acquire some more bubble solution.

I also have sunscreen that has to be used before it expires. Hopefully the weather will be such that this is a requirement.

Thursday and Friday

How late into the evening is the work going on for Thursday and Friday? I work all day but could probably help after work

thank you!

We're anticipating that the work will continue into the evening on Thursday and Friday, likely until 8pm or so. The group will likely take a break over the dinner hour - it will depend upon the foreman.

And thank you katwalk for your offer of childcare - that is very generous and helpful!

Certainly something

To take advantage of. Having been through two builds of this sort the one thing that is needed is childcare on site so that the parents that do come out can focus on the build not their kiddos.

I know we had kids with their babysitting course there for some times to help with this issue.

Have fun!

Confirming Child Care

I will book myself for Friday afternoon, 1:00 to 4:00 PM approximately if parents want to make arrangements accordingly.

I have the Child Abuse Registry Certificate etc.

I can plan to return on Saturday between 11:30 and 4:00 PM if there appears to be a need. It is often a case of one parent looking after the child(ren) while the other works retail or an insane shift at the hospital and other 24/7 facilities. If that parent would like to help with the build, I will help you with the child care.

If there are others that would like to help me during those times come on over. If you are available for other times, I can leave my chalk and bubble stuff with the building committee.

Child Care Required?

I have not had any response to my offer to look after the children of those that are building.

Will I be required?

Will others be available as well?

Or is this unnecessary.

Paused for Lunch

The workers have paused from 1:30-2:30 for a quick lunch. I stashed my chalk and bubble stuff on the benches by the planter if you want to keep the smaller children on the grass area. The sidewalk between the grass and build area would be okay for chalk creations.

I will return after 3:15 and stay until the supper break or 6:00 PM.

Like Magic

I am posting some photos of how the build is going. This is to remind everyone that these playground structures do not appear by magic by with a lot of work from volunteers.

They have a post hole digger so you do not have to worry about that back breaking job.

They have rented all the tools they will require so you do not have to bring yours and risk breaking or losing them.

They could use some extra muscles. I am dealing with an asthma problem and my energy has been zapped by it. I will try to make it there on Saturday after 10 AM too look after any children of builders. Until I get there, I have left a couple of buckets of sidewalk chalk and some bubble stuff to keep them occupied. If there is an older child that could watch the younger ones. they would be contributing to their community which is a great lesson to learn.

Uploading photos now. Plan to spend a couple of hours on Saturday helping and be part of the magic of a community.

My Apologies

My asthma kept me awake most of the night and I feel like I have twenty percent lung capacity this morning.

I will not be able to look after children of volunteer builders today.

A huge bouquet to

all the wonderful volunteers who have worked so hard setting up the new Green Acres playground. It looks absolutely fantastic & very colourful. Thank you so much. The kids are going to love it.

Green acres

Checked the place out with my son Colton tonight. Great job everyone... Gr Acres was my first school and would've killed to have that playground back in the day. Particularly thought the diggers (see pic) were cool.

Were you not there after 93? There was diggers in the old one too, I'll miss the old park it was pretty awesome back in the day especially because it was accessible to all, but I suppose it was well beyond it's life expectancy.

I didn't realize you were that much older than I, I know for a fact that the school should have a picture of it, I might but we're talking real old school have to be scanned kind of picture. there was a ramp up and in for wheelchairs, a house a tire ladder, a couple of slides a wobbly bridge and a tire bride and a zip line and monkey bars etc. I could literally draw the thing out by memory lol. Pretty sure it was built in the summer of 92 or 93, it was brand new when I started going there in September 93. I don't know if the swings are still there but the "old park" where there was swings and that climbing wall were still on the south side of the rink when I was there as well as the paddling pool on the east side. Crazy to think it's been 20 years since then, I went to that alumni thing in the spring and i don't remember seeing it but i sort of wish I had of taken a moment to go check out the old park before it was gone.
