Car rental experiences in Las Vegas?

Interested in hearing about car rental experiences while in Vegas. Have not rented a car since high school . What companies do you go with? Insurance options? Daily rates? Pick up at airport or down town? Heading down to Lake Havasu for a couple of days. Checked out a few companies on line the insurance options were very pricey.

By any chance? If you do, book through them and save a ton.

I have rented twice in Vegas. First time I went through Costco and got a Budget Rent A Car. Less than $100 for the week, I turned down the insurance because my credit card company has car rental insurance if you pay on the card. No issues, in and out without so much as a look. The only thing they were worried about was the gas tank.

Second time we used Avis through our Aeroplan. Got to the desk and they offered us an upgrade to a BMW for $25, so we took it. I was very nervous driving it, so I did buy their extended insurance, which was supposed to be $45. Same deal, they did not look at the car in or out, only the gas tank full was what they looked for.

Got the bill a couple of weeks later and low and behold there were $300 in extra charges. Seems the $45 total the guy said it was for extra insurance was actually $45 per day. They refused to stand up for the error. As well, the upgrade fee was also per day.

I was livid, and tried to get through the ridiculous customer service mess but still do not have it reduced.

Long story short, don't use Avis, and don't book through Aeroplan.

I have had excellent experiences in the US with both Enterprise and Budget - good prices and never any issues.

Have never been to Vegas but have rented cars in many US cities. We always take out insurance here as it is SOOO much cheaper. Decline the car agency insurance (you do need proof that you pre-purchased your own).

agree with Crunch

We always purchase rental car insurance before we leave the province. It's relatively inexpensive. Last time I believe the initial policy fee was 15 plus 7 per day. We were gone for 2 weeks and our MPI insurance was around 110 dollars. Really reasonable compared to the cost at the rental booth. I also agree with Budget always had good luck with them.

Car rental in Vegas

So the MPI policy to get covers every scenario? No matter what happens I can just walk away and they will handle it?

off site

We have rented cars numerous times and have found that off site rentals are way way cheaper than at the airport sometimes the prices at the airport are close to double as those of off site locations of the same rental company. The one time we lucked out because the airport rental company said they would match the off site price which was close to $300.00 cheaper for the mini van for two weeks.
