KFC Building on 5th St. Demolished

I wonder what they are going to put in it's place? Hopefully it will be more affordable apartments, because Brandon certainly needs them.

Champs Kentucky Fried Chicken

The Champs Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchise on 5th and Princess officially opened February 25, 1965. It was a real treat for Brandon families at the time. It was a $50,000 investment for the Winnipeg based Champs Fine Foods group and the 9th KFC franchise that the company owned. Oscar Grubert was the Winnipeg President of Champs and the local General Manager here was a gentleman by the name of Hank Piedalue.

The concrete building with a full basement was constructed by E.C. Higgens and Sons Construction of Brandon.

The Grand Opening had the City of Brandon's Mayor Steven Magnacca opening the restaurant. The Grand Opening Special had a pick-up only 3 piece dinner of chicken, fries, a roll and chicken gravy as a 2 for 1 special at $1.25 (Limit of 4!). Any other time, home delivery was offered.

Interesting to read.

I have some nice memories of this one as well. When we first moved to Brandon my Grandmother and Great Aunt would come to Brandon often to visit and for medical appointments. They usually stopped for a bucket before coming to my home for a visit.
It was already in decline by this point, but still holds a special place in memory lane for me.

Can't say I miss the chicken, but I do miss them. I hated passing that building all boarded up. Glad to see progress.

Closed

Not from Brandon but come in often. When did that KFC close. Is the KFC/Taco Bell owned by the same owners who had the older location being torn down?

hatsoff

I enjoyed the history read

about this KFC, I only remember it when it was in it's last open year.....looking just as bad as it did right before it was demolished Sorry but it was a dump right before they closed. Nice to imagine it when it was run well and neat to think of it back in 1965.....anyone have old photos by chance?
