Assiniboine river - frozen?

Anybody been out snowmobiling on the Assiniboine? Just wondering if it's safe to venture out there?

Crossed on Saturday

We crossed it on Saturday at the bridge in Grand Valley. There were already tracks going across but I haven't seen any going down the river.

Assiniboine

As someone that has used the Assiniboine in both summer and winter I can say that there are spots on the Assiniboine that are quite deep. Going through the ice at any depth in cold temeratures would be a bad experience at best.

I haven't been on the river this winter, so I can't say if it's safe or not. We had a warm extended fall season and now we have a heavy snow cover. Both of those conditions can lead to less ice than normal. If you're going to use the river for recreation, be careful where you go until you know for sure it's safe.

River

We were west of Grandvalley and #1 near the river in late Dec and it looked like the river level had risen. There was water on both sides and visible wetness in centre where the ice was rough from the freeze and snow in early dec. The ice looked pretty rough before the snow. Having said that, the cold temps and wind make for thicker ice. I'd say crossing would be fine, but a river run may not be.
