Tent caterpillars

See if you can spot anything like this in any of your trees (almost as hard as a rock, easier to see right now before trees leaf out):

That's what their eggs look like. Cut one off of my grape vine late last summer and another off my apple tree that I assume would've turned into a mess in May/June if left to their own device. Haven't read whats expected for population this time around but If I had to bet I'd put money on my yard being more the rule than the exception.

I live in a apt but last spring we had alot crawling onto our sides of balconies and dropping from the top so gross lol and they were coming from a tree between our apts and greenwood apts, and I really hope they arent this spring. Glad you saved your grape and apple trees lol
Thank you for the photo too

Army worms are back.. spray now !

Inspect your trees.. spray now and maybe if we get them early they won't be as bad this year. They're small, but lots of em.. saw them at Canadian tire on the trees.

Eastern Tent caterpillar

Hope I'm wrong, but if egg masses I've found on trees in my yard this year that didn't have problems last year are any indication, this year could be the motherload.

If you see on City trees please make sure the Parks Dept knows, http://www.brandon.ca/report-an-issue

Can someone post a picture of what this looks like we have black masses growing on our trees but when googling it it comes up as black knot disease.

eggs

There's a pic a little more than halfway down at this link. Any I've seen haven't been much wider than a dime if that.

They're supposed to hatch at the first flush of leaves (aka now as per OP), so chance it might already be bordering on too late to nip in the bud at that phase? If anyone knows more on lifecycle and control please share!

Info

Some good info at the link below via Winnipeg. From that link,
"On smaller trees and shrubs, an effective means of controlling the forest tent caterpillar is pruning or breaking off the egg masses on the twigs and disposing of them in the garbage. This is best done in fall or in early spring when there are no leaves on the trees and the egg masses are most visible. After hatching, young colonies of larvae can be pruned off or squashed while they are resting in clusters on the main stem, especially in the evening or on cool nights."

egg mass

we have masses on our trees, but they are much to high to prune, or even spray, our neighbours trees are covered as well. I think its going to be a bad year, possibly worse than last year.

Trim N' Prune

Just a piece of advice if you do decide to trim the branches be sure to dispose of them properly. Don't just put them in a bag in your garbage bin or you will hate yourself in a few days. I'm speaking from experience. Drive those buggers far away!!

Brandon is

to start spraying next week but it is a little late for some areas! Let'e get ahead of the curve Brandon!!! Trees in front of my home by Vincent Massey school are crawling in places. I sprayed my entire property with Grub out. That killed most of them but they are growing and marching all over. Fanning out from the host nest. Kind of like a bad B rated horror movie!

Army Tent Caterpillar worms

Just walked alongside the parking lot of the Victoria Inn on Victoria Avenue and the trees are being stripped bare. After taking a closer look it is unbelievable the number of worms clinging to the trees, they are solid like a carpet.

I don't think we can expect the city to spray the city, but I will be spraying my trees with malathion as soon as I notice them around my yard and don't care who doesn't like it.

We were out of malathion so my husband used the blue dawn dish soap mixed with water. They're dead but now he needs to remove them off the tree....barf!!

I don't even

Want to be outside near them. Does anyone remember about how long we will experience them?

I try not to google anything to do with them because pictures of them aways pop up and creep the hell out of me. It's ridiculous I know but it's hard to shake that heebie jeebie feeling.

government building

Went to renew passport at government building on Princess. They were hanging off the trees and it was like trying to go through a maze on the street so as not to get them on you. The street is also black with dead ones.

The give me the heebie jeebies. Our apple trees have some. We've removed the affected limbs, but they keep showing up again.

Just like they are going to clean the streets, and finish the Sportsplex, and clean/ repair the Discovery Centre, and plan to fog for mosquitoes in September... all talk, no action

It is only some of Brandon that is getting sprayed.

"areas on the North Hill and smaller population pockets" per the city website.

My trees are way to high to spray. How did you do it?

We sprayed too

and trimmed some branches, only to have the wind blow the little buggers back onto our "caterpillar free" trees. Now they are so high, there is no way to reach them. Its futile really if the neighbours don't attend to their trees, and the city doesn't spray. My trees are looking pretty bare.
