working on commission or chair rental

Wondering what hairstylists prefer and why. I have never done the chair rental and am considering it but wish I had more info from other stylists. I also have no idea what an average chair rental would be?

Chair rental

About 400 upwards to 600 a month depending on the salon

Depends. Do you already have existing clientele and simply looking for a spot to work out of? If you do not have clients already I would not suggest renting a chair as you could find it tough to make money. I haven't cut hair in a few years so I may also be out of touch. Might be worth it to talk to the salon owner who might be able to give you some better advice.
