There is basically no end.

No you dont have to walk around with your head in your phone. I have my phone in my pocket with the game on, and when it vibrates that lets me know there is a pokemon there.

You cannot see other people that play atm. They are going to implement it at some point.

You keep collecting pokemon to level up the combat power of your high ones.

When you are near a gym, you can battle the people in the gym to try to take the gym over. You can get bonuses when you hold a gym. Best to go as a group to battle a gym though.

How do I get my avatar from being in the green screen? And yes I walked around with it, tried the app while hubby was driving, tried it in Subway at lunch. Still nothing

Your avatar will always be in the green space. There will be a vibration on the screen when you are near one and you tap on that. Then the camera kicks in and you see the pokemon in the real world and try to catch it.

info

the game will vibrate the device and 'push' notify you when a monster is nearby. You won't get to battling until around level 5 when you can think about joining one o the teams around.

The setup of the game is to get you moving, so walking idly around a single field wont net you another potential pokeomon for an hour or so (or whatever the respawn rate actually is). You have to move at least half a block if not more to hunt them.

Google has PLENTY of advice already on it or how to get first of the idea of the game and then how to be an expert at it. Just

So far it is Basically soon as you start and have your avatar done you are given a choice of 1 of 3 starters. You catch them by flicking the ball at them and hoping they stay in it. Next get out and explore looking for Pokemon. Catch every one you see by just clicking on it then going threw the catching phase again. Don't worry about the balls as you can get about 3 of them at each pokestop you visit. Finding pokestop a is very easy especially if you know a good area with lots of churches nearby. New era is a common spot since there are 2 spots on top of each other pretty much and people are using lures there lots to try and attract Pokemon to the area. And each stop will reset after a little bit if you stick around waiting for Pokemon to show up.
Once you have lots of Pokemon you can go threw your Pokemon list and transfer any duplicates you have and you get a candy for that breed that eventually you can use to evolve them. Probably best to save that stuff till you are a higher level though.
And don't forget to put any eggs you get into the incubator while your walking around. Incubators will do only 1 egg at a time and the starter one has infinite uses.
