The Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone's taking measures to curb an ongoing sump pump problem in Plumas.

"In the community of Plumas, we're having issues with our sewer. It's something we've had before," says Mayor David Single. "The problem is when people have their sump pumps going, it's overloading the sewer system. It's a low-pressure sewer system, and it's just not made to handle all of the sump pump water. They are supposed to be pumping it outside, and not into the sewer system."

Single explains it's causing everyone else's sump pumps to work extra hard, and several have been blowing lines due to overheating. He says the water should be pumped into the back yard, and there's a by-law that enforces that.

He notes the public works staff is going to visit each home and check for the problem, noting they're currently determining if they'll levy a fine or not.

Single adds, "And people should know better than this already, and they keep on doing it."
