Manitoba now seen its fifth case of the PED virus in the last two weeks. All cases have been reported out of the southeast region.

HyLife president Claude Vielfaure says the outbreaks are a big concern and, as an industry, they are aggressively working to try and eradicate the virus noting they have been successful in the past.

"All producers are on high alert as far as biosecurity, as far as people going to the barns and out of the barns, and traffic, and transportation," notes Vielfaure. "It's something our industry has always been on top of, but sometimes things happen and we get an outbreak. Then we have to work to rectify it."

Vielfaure notes where the virus has been detected, the farms then begin a whole clean-up process to help bring the status back to a negative reading. He says HyLife has taken safety measures over the last few years by ramping up biosecurity, making sure employees are taking these measures seriously, as well as washing and disinfecting trucks.

"Since 2014, [when there was a large outbreak in the United States], we've had our truck washes. So, you wash and disinfect your truck and then the next step, to get even better security, is actually to, what we call, bake a trailer at a very high heat for ten minutes, which will kill all bacteria and viruses. So, that's an extra precaution we have taken in the last couple years."

He says he's thankful for the Chief Veterinarian's office as they have been on top of these outbreaks and are working to help producers clean up and move forward.
