Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – One Westman softball player will get a chance to wear the red and white this summer.
Zoe Hicks of Boissevain was named to Canada’s National Junior Team roster last week.
The 19-year-old just wrapped up her freshman year at Iowa Western University and is looking forward to the opportunity.
"I’ve worked really hard and this has been a goal of mine for a long time," said Hicks.
"I’m incredibly grateful for the people who got me here and the support of my family."
The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team will gather in Surrey, BC to compete in the Canada Cup July 8-16 before heading to Clearwater, Florida for the World Championship.
Hicks is one of just two Manitoba girls on the roster, the other is Alexis Huggart of Treherne.
The 2016 MHSAA Provincial Gold Medalist is the daughter of former Neepawa Natives and Yellowhead Chiefs coach Al Hicks, and sister of former Winkler Flyer Zak Hicks.
She says the competitive nature in her family has kept her motivated.
"It kept me pushing myself. I see my brother going to school to play a sport he loves and it showed me if I put my mind to something I can accomplish similar things."
The 2017 WBSC Junior Women’s Softball World Championship runs from July 24 to 30th.
