Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings will wrap up the home half of the WHL pre-season schedule tonight when the Moose Jaw Warriors come to town.
The Wheat Kings opened the pre-season with a weekend split with the Regina Pats one week ago and will look to build good habits heading into the regular season opener one week from tonight.
With just 21 active players in camp, the coaching staff have put the players to work this week with long, competitive practices.
"They have been heavy workloads…hard working days," said Head Coach David Anning of this week’s practice schedule. "We’ve been on the ice longer than we typically are but I think it’s good for our group."
Brandon entered the week with six players away at NHL Camps while four more remained on the sideline with injuries.
The good news is, with the rookie camp portion of NHL camps now in the books a number of players will begin to slowly make their way back to the Wheat City.
Case in point, Thursday morning when the Vegas Golden Knights announced that Logan Thompson was being sent back to the club.
Thompson dressed in two rookie games for the Knights, registering a shutout in 30:00 of play.
"By all accounts…our guys have performed well," said Anning of his guys at NHL Camps. "Some guys will be moving on to main camp which is a great experience for them. As guys slowly trickle back we will get them into the lineup as quick as we can and get the accustom to being a Wheat King again."
Tanner Kaspick (St.Louis), Nolan Patrick (Philadelphia), Ty Lewis (Colorado), Kale Clague (LA), and Stelio Mattheos (Carolina) are all listed on their respective Main Camp Rosters. NHL Teams will begin on-ice sessions today (Sept 15).
Game time tonight at Westman Place is 7:30 p.m.
Our Q-Country pre-game show with myself and Pete Gerlinger begins at 7:00 p.m.
