Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – A flurry of goals in the first and third period put the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings on top of the Winnipeg Thrashers.
The Thrashers scored the first goal of the game eight minutes in when Kobe Campbell fired one home just outside the slot.
The Wheat Kings were given a gift when the Thrashers took two penalties thirty seconds apart, putting the team on a 5-on-3.
Nolan Ritchie received a pass from Brett Paddock to tie the game. Forty-five seconds later Carter Sawchuk scored the second powerplay goal of the game to put the Wheat Kings up 2-1.
Later in the third, Brett Paddock scored on a 2-on-1 to put the Wheat Kings up by two.
In the second period, the Thrashers scored first again after a fluky goal scored by Auston Thorarinson made it’s way over defenders and past Keegan Watkins-McIntyre.
The Wheat Kings responded near the end of the period, when Nolan Ritchie scored his second of the game to put the Wheat Kings up by two once again.
In the third period, two quick goals by Lynden McCallum and Dylan Halliday put the game out of reach as the Wheat Kings sailed to a 7-4 win over the Thrashers.
Keegan Watkins-McIntyre stopped 21 of 25 shots in the game for the win, as Noah Gilbert stopped 35 shots in the loss.
With the win, the Wheat Kings keep up with the Winnipeg Wild for top spot in the league.
