Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings were 5 for 10 on the powerplay and got past a rough Parkland Rangers team, to win 6-3.
The Wheaties scored their first five goals on the powerplay, and didn’t score their first even strength goal until 1:52 left in the game.
In the first period, the Wheat Kings got their first goal from tip-shot in front by Drayson Collyer on the powerplay. Collyer’s name was on the scoresheet many times in the first, as he was the focus to melee after bumping into Parkland goaltender Rory Campbell and getting a double minor for roughing.
Later in the period, Carter Cockburn scored to tie the game for the Rangers.
In the second period, Kurtis Luke scored on the powerplay to put the Rangers up by one.
The Wheat Kings looked like they would be trailing after the two periods, but after a long pass from Dylan Halliday, Lynden McCallum scored on Rory Campbell with 1.4 seconds left in the second.
The third period had much more fireworks.
Brandon scored three unanswered goals to start off the period, including Nolan Ritchie scoring with just under seven minutes left to go. Right after the goal, a line brawl took place, with a few game misconducts given to both teams.
McCullum and Daemon Hunt were both kicked out, while Parkland lost Jackson Betcher and Colby Cherneski were both ejected.
Cole Haukaas and Kurtis Luke were also thrown out at other times.
The final score ended up at 6-3 by the end of the night, with a grand total 122 penalty minutes for both teams.
With the win, Brandon stays pace with the Winnipeg Wild and moves up by two points and has 68 points in total, and sits in first place in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
