Swift Current, SK (CKLQ) – It was a valiant effort on Saturday night as the Wheat Kings dropped a 3-1 decision to the Swift Current Broncos.
For the 2nd straight night, the Wheat Kings were taking on one of the top teams in the WHL and once again came to play.
Linden McCorrister opened the scoring in the first period, finishing off a great feed from Luka Burzan.
However, just before the 1st period would end, Matteo Gennaro snapped his 40th of the season past Logan Thompson to tie the game at one.
Thompson, who made 41 saves on Friday night vs Moose Jaw, stopped 33 tonight vs the Broncos and was named the game’s 3rd star.
Aleksi Heponiemi would score the lone goal of the 2nd period as he found a loose puck in front. That goal from the Finnish import would stand up as the game winner as the Broncos rebounded from a tough 6-5 shootout loss to the Prince Albert Raiders one night prior.
Beck Malentyn would ice it with an empty netter with just 11.8 seconds left on the clock.
The Broncos now have a 4-2-2-0 season series lead on the Wheat Kings with one game remaining. The season finale will happen next Friday at Westoba Place.
As for the Wheat Kings they return home to take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Tuesday night. (7:00 MB on QCountry Radio)
