Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – Two members of the Brandon Wheat Kings joined the 40 goal club during Friday night’s 6-0 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Stelio Mattheos (2G-1A) and Ty Lewis (2G-2A) lead the way for Brandon who got revenge on the Hurricanes, who beat Brandon 7-2 less than two weeks ago. The feat is the first time since the 2016 WHL Championship season that the Wheat Kings have had a pair of 40 goal scorers. (Jayce Hawyrluk (47) and Nolan Patrick (41))
The Wheat Kings powerplay was clicking on Friday, firing three goals past the Lethbridge goaltenders. Logan Flodell was pulled after allowing three goals on nine shots. Reece Klassen came on in relief and made 21 saves.
Luka Burzan and Chase Hartje added singles for Brandon who picked up an important two points in the East Division playoff race.
Logan Thompson turned in another first star performance making 26 saves for his 2nd shutout of the season.
Thompson was a key cog in the defensive wheel on special teams as well. The Wheat Kings found themselves shorthanded eight times tonight and killed off all eight, including a five-on-three opportunity.
Brandon’s schedule won’t get any easier as they open a three-in-three weekend on Friday vs the Swift Current Broncos (7:30 on QCountry Radio).
