Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – Dylan Halliday scored in the first overtime to give the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings a Game 1 victory over the Winnipeg Bruins.
Halliday knocked in a rebound and put it over the pad of Kolby Thornton for the win.
It was a slow start for the two teams, as they only put up 12 shots combined in the opening frame.
But after three powerplay opportunities, Winnipeg finally scored when a point shot redirected off of William Highet.
The Wheat Kings had a brilliant opportunity to tie things up or even take the lead after a double-minor from Breydon Stubbs, but they failed to do so.
But even after keeping the Bruins in their own end for two solid minutes, they couldn’t get one past Thornton.
In the second period, Calder Anderson put one past Thornton to tie it up on the powerplay.
It only took 1:20 after that for Winnipeg to jump back in the lead when Jayson Szun scored on a breakaway to put the Bruins up 2-1.
In the third period, Nolan Ritchie scored eight minutes into the period to tie it up once again.
The game went into the extra frame, where Halliday scored to put the Wheat Kings up 1-0 in the best of five series.
Game 2 is in Winnipeg on Wednesday night at 7:00pm at Southdale Arena.
