Virden, MB (CKLQ) – Virden Oil Capitals head coach Troy Leslie certainly doesn’t expect things to get easier as the team gets ready for the MJHL Finals, but he expects the team to be ready when the team takes on the Steinbach Pistons.
The Pistons were the third ranked team in the CJHL weekly rankings when the season ended back in March, but Leslie doesn’t think his team will be intimidated.
"We just have to continue to do the things we’re good at, and we’ll good the results we want." said Leslie.
The two teams played each other in six games during the season, and the Pistons were dominant getting 11 of a possible 12 points in the season series with a 5-0-0-1 record.
"We played them tight, but they just ended up on top most games." said Leslie.
It’ll be the first time that Virden will appear in the MJHL Finals since moving from Winnipeg in 2012.
Leslie says for that reason, he expects the town to be behind the team.
"It’ll be a fun experience to play in when we play at home." siad Leslie.
Even with the more dominant record during the season, Steinbach actually had to play one more game en route to the Finals.
The Pistons defeated Swan Valley in four straight games, then was taken to six games by Winnipeg.
Virden beat Selkirk in five games, then swept Winkler in four.
"I like how we’re playing right now," said Leslie. "I hope it translates this series."
The first game of the series is on Friday in Steinbach, beginning at 7:30pm.
