As one academic year concludes, Brandon University is already preparing for the start of another. Just days after the 2018 Convocation, the university is welcoming about 100 future students, as well as many parents and support people, to campus for a special pre-orientation event.
The students and their parents or support teams are welcome to attend afternoon sessions either Wednesday, June 6 or Thursday, June 7. Both days will offer the same programming.
“We’re excited about trying this out, it’s the first time we’ve held this style of pre-orientation event, which helps students get acquainted with the campus and all the supports and services we offer,” said Student Engagement Officer Michelle Bessette. “September can be a real whirlwind and there are lots of things on the student checklist that we can help them accomplish right now so they’re ready to go when the fall term starts.”
Admitted students from any faculty or program are welcome to attend pre-orientation. Registrations were requested, but a small number of drop-ins can be accommodated, so long as they are people to intend to come to BU this fall. Generally, these are first-time first-year undergraduate students, although anyone coming to campus for the first time is welcome, including transfer students and graduate students.
Both afternoons will feature the same programming, running from 1–4 p.m. Check in will be at the main entrance to the John E. Robbins Library, then attendees can select from workshops to help them, make the smoothest transition to university life. An information fair will be held in the library Gathering Space throughout the afternoon to meet members of the BU community and to pair faces with the supports available. These will include scholarships and bursaries, co-op and the students’ union, as well as other popular services. There are also brief campus tours and residence tours bring offered.
Academic advising and course selection is not a part of pre-orientation, but attendees will learn how they can make an appointment at a convenient time to speak one-on-one with an advisor.
Pre-orientation is come-and-go, with students invited to attend the sessions that are most relevant to them. There is no fee. A full orientation is planned for fall.
“We can’t wait to meet our future first-years,” Bessette said, “and we can wait for them to meet each other!”
