Brandon and area residents are encouraged to strap on a pair of high heels and meet at the police station on August 16 for the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser.

The 8th annual event is hosted by the Brandon Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA).

"We're looking for men, women, kids, teens ... we want everyone to come out and support us," said BJ Kirouac, Fund Development & Marketing Manager for YWCA.

This year organizers aim to raise $30,000. A third of that has been collected so far through donations and other fundraising events.

"All the money raised stays in Brandon, it goes to the YWCA Westman Women's Shelter, for the women and children fleeing domestic violence, and men as well," Kirouac said.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m. and the walk kicks off at noon. After the block-long walk, participants will be served lunch. There will also be a bouncy castle and dessert auction.

In 2017 the YWCA Brandon provided residential and support services to 838 women, men and children within the community.
