Liberal incumbent Anita Neville has conceded defeat to the Conservative's Joyce Bateman in Winnipeg South Centre.

Neville had served as the area's MP since 2000. Early results showed Bateman with a lead of about 700 votes, according to unofficial results shortly before 11 p.m.

"Yes, we got out of the gates late, but we started running and we never looked back," said Bateman.

Lloyd Axworthy, currently heading up the University of Winnipeg, previously served as the area's MP with the Liberals. Incumbent Liberal candidate Anita Neville then held the riding for the Liberals, until her defeat Monday.

"Along with my staff here in Winnipeg and in Ottawa, we have worked hard to try and improve the lives of so many residents of Winnipeg South Centre, so for me it has been a great privilege," said Neville.

The Liberals are now down to only one seat in Manitoba, with Kevin Lamoureux taking Winnipeg North.

"I am very disappointed that many of my colleagues - fine, great people - have gone down to defeat over the past number of hours," said Neville.

Also running against Neville and Bateman in the riding in 2011 were independent candidate Matt Henderson, independent candidate Lyndon B. Froese, Green Party's Joshua McNeil and the NDP's Dennis Lewycky.
