A man faces multiple charges after a carjacking incident.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, Winnipeg police were called to the first 100 block of West Gate.

A 23-year-old man told officers he had been driving on West Gate, near Blanchard Avenue, when he stopped his van to remove some garbage bags that were in the middle of the road.

Investigators are looking into the possibility the garbage bags were set up as a trap. Witnesses said they saw two young men moving the bags across the street only minutes earlier.

As the victim stepped out of his vehicle to move the bags off the road, he was confronted by a suspect with what appeared to be a firearm, said police.

The suspect demanded the victim hand over the vehicle, said police.

The victim of the carjacking, Mike Green, spoke with CTV News on Thursday.

"He had the gun pointed at me and gestured (to) get out of the van. I froze for a second and said ‘just relax' and I got out," said Green.

The suspect then tried to drive off.

"He ended up running over the bags that were in the road and (got) stuck for a minute. And I sort of stood there, dialing 911 and watching him for about a minute before the bag tore loose and he gunned it down the street," said Green.

Officers' efforts to locate the suspect and vehicle proved unsuccessful. Later, Winnipeg police were told the suspect called RCMP and informed them he was travelling east on the Trans-Canada Highway. Over the phone, the suspect apparently mentioned suicide-by-police.

RCMP found the vehicle in a ditch on the Trans-Canada Highway in the RM of St. Anne.

The suspect was inside the van and initially refused officer commands to exit the vehicle.

When he did finally exit it, he was holding what appeared to be a firearm, which he pointed in the direction of officers, said police.

The suspect then surrendered the item, which turned out to be an imitation firearm.

"(It was) a very tense situation for these officers and I think in this case the outcome could have been much different," said Const. Natalie Aitken, a spokesperson for Winnipeg police.

No injuries were reported.

Christopher Devon Miller, 21, of Winnipeg faces multiple charges, including robbery with an imitation firearm and multiple counts of assault with intent to resist arrest.
