Firefighters rescued seven people from a burning house on Maryland Street early Wednesday morning.

Fire officials say the three adults and four children were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze around 3:30 a.m. They arrived to find the home engulfed in flames.

Police closed Maryland Street between St. Matthews and Ellice Avenue through the morning rush while crews worked at the scene.

District Chief Bruce Duncan says the fire started on the exterior of the second floor and extended up to the attic and down to the basement.
