A massive fire in a Vancouver suburb has destroyed a condominium project with towering flames that could be seen from more than 30 kilometres away.

The blaze broke out in Richmond, B.C., at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, quickly burning down the building that was still under construction.

Firefighters worked to keep the blaze from spreading, but they could not prevent flaming ash from falling onto nearby homes.

Large crowds of local residents gathered in the street to see the bewildering blaze and its speedy destruction of the soon-to-be-finished building.

Aaron Mackay, who lives near the site where the condo was being built, said the building was only a few weeks away from completion.

He was one of "hundreds of people" who were drawn to the site of the flames that shot up into the night sky.

"It was just massive, like I've never seen a fire that big in my entire life," Mackay told CTV News.

At one point, the blaze was reportedly visible to residents of White Rock, about 35 kilometres south of Richmond.
