Precautionary evacuations were underway in Brandon Monday due to flood concerns.

The city of Brandon said evacuations had begun in the area from 4th Street north to 26th Street north and from McDonald Avenue to the river, due to the level of risk of flooding. About 1,000 residents were being told to leave approximately 900 homes.

Officials were going door-to-door in affected areas with evacuation notification cards.

Brandon Mayor Shari Decter Hirst said the evacuation notices are a precautionary measure and added no dikes had been breached Monday afternoon.

All affected residents are expected to leave their properties by 8 p.m. on Monday. An emergency siren will sound in the case of immediate danger.

A reception centre has been set up at the Canada Room in the Keystone Centre for people who are not able to stay with friends and family. Evacuees are asked to bring only necessary items with them.

All evacuees are asked to register either in person, if services from the Reception Centre are required, or by calling the Red Cross at 1-888-662-3211.

The city asks that family pets be kenneled for registration at the PET Reception Centre, also at the Canada Room in the Keystone Centre.

Meantime, Brandon's Kirkcaldy Heights School will be closed until May 24 due to the flooding emergency.

Students and staff are being sent to Brandon University, effective on Wednesday. Parents were slated to be contacted with information on Monday.

The city is considering evacuating some additional homes, north of the Assiniboine River, but that is not yet confirmed and could depend on the amount of rainfall and its effects on the river, said Decter Hirst.
