A Manitoba farmer has been banned from owning livestock for the rest of his life.

That decision was handed down by a Manitoba judge Friday morning.

Martin Grenier was charged last year in connection with a hog operation near Notre Dame de Lourdes.

In June 2010, police and animal welfare officials found hundreds of dead pigs, along with other hogs that had to be euthanized.

Grenier pleaded guilty.

He faces a fine of $60,000.

A spokesperson for Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Food Animals said the punishment doesn't go far enough.

"We're really disappointed with the $60,000 fine. We don't think it's proportionate to the level of cruelty, but we are really happy about the lifetime ban on having livestock," said Twyla Francois.

Grenier is also being sued by a Hutterite colony in connection with the dead animals found last June.

The lawsuit claims Grenier was looking after the colony's hogs at the time.
