The Beautiful Plains Credit Union had a successful 2012, posting $2.9 million in investment and interest income and a profit of $473,264. Loans went up significantly and member deposits and accrued interest rose from $72 million in 2011 to $85 million. The patronage refund was set at $200,000.
BPCU manager Gord Sylvester said, "Our strongest assets are our staff," as he introduced each one individually. A large crowd at the supper meeting at the Neepawa Legion recognized the staff contribution with a round of applause.
Kendra Buchanan and Brent Sorenson received five year service awards, Marla Steen received a 10 year award and Warren McLeod and Carol Bannerman each received a 25 year award.
Minnedosa Credit Union loans officer Harvey Wedgewood spoke about his trip to Africa. Wedgewood has travelled twice to rural Uganda to assist with credit unions there.
"Loans as small as $40 can generate a profit of $400," he stated as he told the story of a rural village merchant who started up by selling used shoes and has expanded into new shoes and clothing.
Wedgewood stated that the credit unions support people with loans and encourage good business practices and promote savings.
The BPCU makes annual donations to help with the African projects.
