Smilin4/17/2011 9:37:05 AM Member since: Jan 2008 | Just to give you a bit of background JimmersChick, they are soup kitchen that serves lunch mon-fri from 12-1 and it is available to everyone. They serve approx. 35,000 meals/year and only have 2 paid staff working there and the rest is volunteers. There is 1 cook and 1 coordinator that keeps the place going with the help of volunteers. I have just came across this place also when I was doing a project for a college assignment and I have been volunteering since. It is amazing what these people do daily for people in need. I hope this has given you some insight to Helping Hands soup kitchen.

Babar4/23/2011 11:54:51 PM Member since: Aug 2008 | I will definitely be donating something to them and looking for somewhere to help out for those less fortunate. There is many opportunities in Brandon to volunteer and this is one for me, so will be checking it out this week. Also wanting to know more information on where they get the food from; it can't be solely on donations, and perhaps are able to get funding from somewhere.

Smilin4/24/2011 7:38:48 AM Member since: Jan 2008 | The food they receive is solely on donations from people. The monetary donations and funds they receive go towards the building costs ie) repairs, utilities, building supplies for cleaning, ect. I did a project for college just recently and interviewed the co-ordinator that is how I am aware as to where donations come from and what is done with the monetary donations, and that they dont purchase the food. Thank you for supporting Helping Hands.

Smilin4/24/2011 7:41:21 AM Member since: Jan 2008 | They also have a hot dog fundraiser and are planning more as huge buildings like their's takes money to run and upkeep. They do get some funding, which is all towards the building. The food supplies come from the generous public. I hope I have been able to answer your questions. If not, I strongly recommend talking to Debbie the coordinator there. Once again, thank you :)

DGA5/11/2011 4:26:43 PM Member since: Aug 2010 | CuriousGeorge and others just wanted to let you know that United Way of Brandon is providing $15,000 this year (2011) to Helping Hands to help pay for the new staff position (Debbie's). You are right this is a terrific organization, doing terrific work in our community. Building rent, utilities, supplies, staffing-all costs money so the United Way is very pleased that this year we can help. There are many businesses and people in Brandon who provide financial assistance to Helping Hands just like many other charities. Most of those folks prefer to stay annonymous. We are very lucky to live in such a caring community.
