Supply Chain and Logistics Responder Volunteer

The Supply Chain and Logistics (SCL) Team is activated for Level 2 or higher responses, if required. The SCL Responder may provide services locally or at a field operations team level. The SCL Responder may coordinate material supplies, goods and vehicles, through established procurement, tracking, warehousing, distribution and transportation processes during a response. Reporting to the Site Manager or SCL Supervisor, the SCL Responder is involved in the team?s delivery of services as assigned. There may be several service sites supported. 



Responsibility 1. Assist with SCL resources, materials, supplies and equipment required for the operation

  • Assess resource requirements as assigned, ensuring the appropriate SCL processes are followed
  • Follow procurement standard procedures as required and in accordance to the CRC Procurement Policy and the Procedures Manual and the Society Contract and Signing Authority (CASA) levels
  • Deliver services as assigned
  • Assist with the demobilization and repatriation of supplies and equipment
  • Participate in operational briefings and debriefings during a response with the logistics team
  • Complete necessary paperwork or data entry as required for reports and tracking 

Responsibility 2. Carry out inventory, warehousing and stocks management requirements

  • Ensure adequate stock when opening site, maintain appropriate level of stock during response and complete a close of operation inventory/reconciliation
  • Observe routine precautions in the handling of goods, materials and equipment including use of required personal protective equipment and hand hygiene
  • Maintain an accurate inventory, provide daily stats or any other data required by the operation
  • Maintain inventory logs, statistics and financial documentation, as required
  • Coordinate with logistics service providers to store and ship goods
  • Track and receive shipments from suppliers, making note of any discrepancies or damage
  • Communicate, report on the progress of the provision of inventory services to the SCL Supervisor
  • Complete necessary paperwork or data entry as required

Responsibility 3. Assists with transport required to support the operation

  • Supports the transportation service unit:
  • Monitors safety considerations for vehicles, inspections, record maintenance
  • Supports the dispatch and tracking of CRC and rental vehicles
  • Participates in the shipping of goods and transfers between sites locations, including driving people and inventory to and from site locations 
  • Assists with the demobilization of the fleet
  • Maintain logs, statistics and financial documentation, as required
  • Communicate and report on the progress of the provision of transportation services to the SCL Supervisor 

Responsibility 4. Planning and Preparedness

  • Participate in SCL team member orientation & training
  • Assist in sourcing suppliers, creating new agreements for goods and services needed for operations and updating the contact information in the suppliers tracking sheet
  • Contribute to ensuring response supplies are properly stocked, available and conducts inventory reviews as required
  • Integrates volunteer resources within the scope of responsibilities, as required
  • Contributes to a healthy and safe working environment
  • Performs other duties, as required


  • The incumbent must have the commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement and model the core competencies of the CRCS: team excellence, service excellence, accountability and results focused.
  • This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check and vulnerable sector check
  • This position requires a valid Drivers License and a satisfactory Drivers Abstract 


  • This position requires completion of post-secondary education in a related field and or a minimum of one year of work-related experience in logistics, procurement and/or supply chain management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Office Programs (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of procurement, transportation, warehousing or distribution an asset
  • Understanding of Red Cross role in disaster response, relief and recovery an asset


  • Language requirements vary ? must be able to deliver services as appropriate in English or French
  • Customer Service Skills - Excellent interpersonal skills, including handling interactions with colleagues, suppliers, and the public
  • Communication skills - verbal and non-verbal cues, active listening, clearly able to explain self and confirm understanding from others
  • Remains calm during a crisis - Don?t allow emotions to get in the way, don?t take things personal, stay positive, respond decisively and take accountability
  • Ability to work well within a team - share information, be helpful, respectful, approachable, build strong relationships
  • Attention to detail - accuracy in completing forms, giving information
  • Dependable - Timely, takes initiative and ownership of work, completes with little supervision
  • Ability to lift and carry goods weighing up to 50lbs or assist in carrying goods weighing up to 80lbs
  • Ability to climb stairs, as well as transition frequently in and out of a vehicle
  • Certification in standard or emergency first aid, or willingness to complete
  • This position requires a successful Canadian criminal record check.

  • Potential for responding in disaster areas, as well as difficult and unstable conditions (environmental, physical, social, etc.) and uncomfortable conditions (noise, odours, smoke, humidity, vulnerable clients). Working in these stressful rapidly changing environments with limited information to make decisions can have the potential to affect the physical and psychological state of the responders on sitePotential for basic or hardship living conditions/accommodations
  • The incumbent may need to stand for several hours
  • Ability to respond during non-traditional hours (i.e. late night or weekends) and long hours of work in a demanding context
  • Ability to be on-call when scheduled, as required
  • Ability to respond in local community (3 days minimum) and outside of their community (10 days minimum)
  • Personal protective equipment will be supplied, as required
