POSITION: GIS/Engineering Technician Summer Student

Wages: $15.17 per hour (2023 rates)
Hours: 36.25 hours/week
Location: A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex
Job Description:
Assisting Engineering staff in data collection, data entry and data verification.
Qualifications for the GIS/Engineering Technician Summer Student:
- Completion of Civil Technician certificate or first year of Civil Technology diploma or the completion of at least one year of post-secondary GIS education;
- Previous experience assisting in topographical, layout and control surveys for civil engineering projects;
- Previous experience operating survey instruments (total stations, levels and GPS);
- Knowledge of principles and practices of GIS, databases and mapping;
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, AutoCAD and ESRI ArcGIS software;
- Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability; and
- Ability to work independently.
Responsibilities for the GIS/Engineering Technician Summer Student:
GIS Support
- Quality control activities on existing GIS data;
- Collect and compile new data;
- Field verification of data;
- Support GIS staff as needed;
Transportation Planning
- Collect, organize and upload traffic pass-by counts;
- Collect, process, organize data and upload traffic turning movement counts;
- Collect, process and upload pedestrian and cyclist counts; and
- Update sign inventory for GIS Traffic Sign layer (as required by the GIS team).
Infrastructure Planning
- Collect, organize and upload water, wastewater and land drainage infrastructure data through the review of as-built records, operational records and field data;
- Assist in performing field inspections and surveys of existing water, wastewater and land drainage infrastructure to verify missing or incorrect data;
- Operate survey instruments (total stations, levels and GPS);
- Verify rain gauge and flow meter data and inform staff when the equipment requires calibration or maintenance;
- Review and verify leak detection data from Sewer and Water; and
- Assist with creating modeling request template forms for water and stormwater.
