On the strength of a steal of two in the tenth end, Team Canada including Brandon’s Brayden Payette topped Germany by a 7-4 score on Friday to advance to Saturday’s Gold Medal game in men’s action at the World Junior Curling Championships in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
Team Canada is skipped by Jacques Gauthier out of Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club. In addition to Payette at 2nd the team also features Winnipeg’s Zack Bilawka and Jordan Peters.
Payette joined the team for what will be his final junior curling season in 2019-2020 after having previously skipped a foursome out of Brandon. The rink won their way into the World Junior tournament with a near-perfect Canadian Junior tournament that saw them winning 10 of 11 games.
Canada had finished the round-robin portion of this week's tournament with a 7-2 record before Friday's semi-final.
Canada will take on Yves Wagenseil’s Team Switzerland (6-4) in the Gold Medal game on Saturday morning in Krasnoyarsk. Canada won the previous head-to-head match between the two on Sunday by a 7-5 score. On account of the time zone difference, the final game will be played on Friday night Manitoba time with a live stream on World Curling TV’s YouTube Channel showing an 8pm start time
