About Us

Migiziwazison Healing Lodge is a community-based emergency shelter dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for women and children who are escaping domestic violence, gender-based violence, family violence, and all forms of abuse. Our holistic approach to healing focuses on the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our families. Our goal is to help women heal from past trauma, rediscover their identity, and embrace new opportunities for growth. We offer a range of services, including trauma-informed care, individual and group counseling, referrals, cultural support, and children’s programs, all designed to foster healing, growth, and empowerment. At Migiziwazison Healing Lodge, we are passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.

Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Wellness Worker to join our team. The Wellness Worker will serve as a front-line service provider, assisting women and families in navigating available federal and provincial services, as well as community resources (e.g., education, housing, health, and social).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to crisis calls and requests for admission, assess service needs, safety needs, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Utilize a case management model to assess client needs and provide crisis intervention through both Western and Indigenous care approaches.
  • Support clients through education and supportive counseling, helping them develop personalized plans to rebuild their family structure.
  • Facilitate communication with relevant community agencies to ensure clients have access to necessary services, and advocate on their behalf if necessary.
  • Collaborate with team members to create a healthy and welcoming environment for all shelter clients.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records.
  • Document and report shelter activities and operations.
  • Participate in all staff meetings and training workshops.
  • Lead group sessions such as sharing circles or healing circles to address spiritual and healing needs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Social Work or a related counselling, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in crisis intervention and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge and skills in supporting individuals and families affected by violence, trauma, or family breakdown.
  • Knowledge of the Child & Family Services Act in Manitoba.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to take initiative.
  • Familiarity with community resources and programs that assist families.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe history, traditions, culture, and community values.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid, as well as training in Suicide Intervention and Prevention, and Non-violent Crisis Intervention are assets.
  • Clear Criminal Record, Child Abuse, and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.
  • Valid Manitoba driver’s license required.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts including days, evenings, and overnights.

Please note: Our shelter is in Keeseekoowenin which is an hour north of Brandon. Communal living accommodation (e.g., shared housing) is available for qualified full-time candidates who may require them while working at the shelter.
