Help...How to stop wild grasses from ruining my landscaping..
5/15/2009 at 12:03 PM
Last summer I tilled up a portion of my yard for putting in some trees. I tilled the area and tirelessly removed all of the weeds/vegetation that had been growing in said area to a depth of about 1 and 1/2 feet deep. I then added back soil to return it back to the height that was wanted. I planted the trees and desired spacings, then covered the balance of the tilled area with a landscaping fabric/weed barrier. Around the trees I put a mulch ring, and for the balance of the area I filled in with crushed rock.
Late last summer I was perplexed to see grass starting to poke through areas covered with rock, but nothing where the mulch was covering. Needless to say now that we are getting some sunshine(admit it we've had a little) more and more of these wild grasses are starting to sprout through and are really starting to ruin all of the hard work I put in last summer.
I have tried multiple weed/grass killers with little benefit and in some cases the stuff seems to work like fertilizer for these growths.(round-up, killex, weedgone)
Is there anyone out there that has rectified a similar issue? Any tips, tricks, hints or words of advice would be greatly appreciated...
As a side note all of the trees I have planted have taken well and are budding...unfortunately the grasses that are natural to the area are also thriving.
Thanks in advance,
K
