Manitoba to move to Critical (Red) on Pandemic Response System on Nov 12

As per the link below, the Province of Manitoba (including Prairie Mountain Health and Brandon) is moving to Critical (Red) on the province's Pandemic Response system beginning at 12:01AM on Thursday.

Please read the entire link to make sure you're as informed as possible. From the link, these are listed as restrictions that will be in effect province-wide:

• Social contacts reduced to your household only. Social gatherings are not permitted.
• Travel to and from northern Manitoba is restricted and non-essential travel is discouraged.
• Retail businesses listed as critical services, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, can remain open at 25 per cent capacity.
• Retail businesses not on the list are able to provide e-service, curbside pickup or delivery services.
• All personal service businesses, including hair salons, barbers and sites offering manicures, pedicures and other esthetic services, must close.
• Gyms and fitness centres must close.
• Religious and cultural gatherings must close or be provided virtually only.
• Restaurants must close to the public and may be open for delivery, drive-thru or takeout only.
• All recreational activities, sports facilities, casinos, museums, galleries, libraries, movie theatres and concert halls must close.

In answering a question that I suspect many might have, in response to a question at today's media conference on the new restrictions, it was said that we should be prepared for the new restrictions to be in place for at least four weeks.

The half the public is bashing the province and Public health for being too late with restrictions while the other half is bashing them for not giving enough time for restrictions to be put in place. They are criticized no matter what they do. It is time people stop criticizing and start being more helpful. At today’s conference a reporter asked about transparency as so many people are complaining the government is not being transparent enough. I think they have done the best they can. If people want more transparency then people need to define what they mean by being transparent and what additional information is needed to meet those needs.
It is too easy to be an armchair critic and people should keep those thoughts to themselves.

For a little more context on why Prairie Mountain Health is also now Red...

Going by the daily data I've been recording from the Provincial dashboard, Prairie Mountain has had an increase of 104 cases since November 1... 36 of those being Brandon. In some circles I've seen folks with the wrong idea that this is a Winnipeg story, simply not the case. The virus has been on the rise here, now is the time to stomp on it

Without questioning, there is no accountability. Tell me how on earth we are getting so many cases in PCHs when we ALL saw first hand what happened in the PCHs in BC and Quebec. PCH outbreaks there brought to light lots of concerns with PCH management which let COVID run rampant in what we all know are very vulnerable population. Perhaps what is wanted in respect to transparency is to know what Manitoba did with this knowledge. What changes were done, if any, with respect to the PCHs. I am as disgusted by PCH situation as is the Winnipeg mayor. I think restrictions should have come sooner for Winnipeg. You can’t use PMH response to the orange level we were placed in back ago as a guide to how Winnipeg region would respond. That’s a city of 1 million.... Believe me I am doing everything I can to not get COViD. Not so much that I’m worried about my health. I realize it would be a significant burden to our health care system to track and trace. I have loved ones who are at risk. I wear a mask everywhere other then my car and home. We did not do Thanksgiving and have long since decided not to be doing any Christmas. As many other Manitobans out there, I am doing my part. I understand why it has come to placing the whole province in Red....but this is very short notice given what they have done in the past

But a good chance Christmas won't be happening, this is for a month at least so 12th December if not extended.
Whats the rules going to be after this for gatherings and stores being open to do any shopping that couldn't be done online.
We don't want to be going through a 3rd code red in January when cases rise after Christmas having fun . we've already had 2 lockdowns that have or will destroyed many jobs, companies and lives if the actual flu didn't cause deaths of loved ones. We need to get rid of this somehow, we got down to 1 case a few months ago now look at the mess.. Christmas isn't the answer sadly

I know my family will be foregoing Christmas this year. We gave up Thanksgiving too.

It really sucks but we all have to do our part.

Sadly, gatherings like Christmas and Thanksgiving are the perfect storm for Covid. Its close proximity, people eating which increases saliva and mouth excretions, and typically a larger gathering. None of that is a good idea during a pandemic. Look at the spike in cases since thanksgiving - surely some of the transmission occurred at the dinner table.

A gathering like Christmas could easily result in an entire family getting sick. Covid is way too dangerous, unpredictable and contagious.

Cases have been on a steep incline for the last while, 300-400/day, Winnipeg is code red, and you say this is short notice? I think it was clear that we would be code red in the Province very soon, and that day is Thursday. I think many are doing the best they can.

I mean, I was expecting it. I just expected the announcement maybe Friday and then giving people until Monday like last time. Not so much to give people time to gather, but to give employers/ businesses time to talk to their employees and make a plan. I mean, lots of people who work retail and restaurants are getting a phone call today saying they're laid off. And sure the province technically gave them tomorrow, but thats remembrance day when a lot of the affected businesses would have been closed anyway.

BSD Superintendent just sent out an update that the status change doesn’t effect schools, which will continue to operate under orange and measures recently implemented.

Less of it on here, but the fighting really needs to stop. Notice, Fault, Politics, Mask effectiveness, etc. When things go red, the time for debate and trying to prove who’s smartest really needs to take a back seat. This is serious business, focus needs to first and foremost be on understanding what’s needed of us to keep this community safe, making sure that others know that same info and doing what we have to do!

I think the short time frame underlies the urgency of the situation. They've added ICU beds and more medical beds (by converting primarily surgical beds), and they're still running 95%+ capacity. There isn't time to wait until Monday I guess.

The good news is that many businesses can still be open, either at reduced capacity or via curbside/delivery. So not all is lost.

I agree but I suspect it is not the government or the Public Health officials who are to blame and possibly the management for the PCHs but rather a systemic problem you will find in all of healthcare not just PCHs. They can only address what they are being told. If frontline staff tell management that everything is ok then management will relay that to public health. Cut backs in Management leaves them in a position where they have to rely on the frontline staff reports which may not be totally correct. There are a lot of good people who work in PCHs but it is also a challenging environment to work in. This is why they have to investigate what happened to see where improvements can happen to prevent a situation like this from happening again.
It may be impossible to provide the total transparency that you mention.

There will be plenty of time in the future to debate, point fingers and blame. There will be a day of judgement for our "decision makers" where transparency and accountability will be given, if for no other reason, to attempt to stave off a no-confidence vote. We all know who insisted on large family gatherings at Thanksgiving and a refusal to not cancel Halloween and that info is stored for a more appropriate time. Right now, our people are dying and the health system needs us all to grow up and work together. Nothing else matters right now.

A stat that I didn't realize that might help put this a little more into context for some folks that havent grasped how much Prairie Mountain's active cases have crept up this month...

On August 21 when they announced that we had to move to our first 'Orange', PMH was at 116 active cases.

Yesterday when we were a part of the provincial move to 'Red' PMH was at 128 active cases.

Lots of different dynamics at play such as as time of year, ICU capacity and prevalence of virus elsewhere in the province but this flat out isnt the Winnipeg story that at least a few seem to still want to make it. We need to get our house in order along with the rest of the province.

Walmart - Super Store

During the last shut down it seemed that Walmart and Super Store were allowed to keep their whole store open and not just the grocery side. I wonder if that will be the case under Code Red and if so it really creates and unfair playing field for all the other retail operations which at the best can only offer curbside or delivery services.
