Hey folks, I noticed there are a couple of tents/shacks set up just north of the soccer fields on 1st Street. They are not visible from the road as they are behind a little hill east of 1st Street (by river). I thought this was city property but maybe I’m mistaken. Does anyone know if this is city land or is this private property? There’s a stack of firewood and some picnic tables next to the tents. I was looking for a place to walk but didn’t want to cross the area if it’s private property. Any info would be much appreciated...thanks!

The land is City owned.  
 
The individual up there that lives in that tent is a very nice gentleman. Please be kind and respectful towards him.  
 
It is acknowledged that yes the individual is squatting on City land, the City and BPS are aware of this individual.  
 
Also remember that BYSA Park is private property and has signs posted reminding people of this.  
 
This area as a whole, is not a great spot to walk as it's all private property. The Discovery Centre paths or Dinsdale Park.

You say it’s city property, and in the same breath say it’s private property. Which is it?

The old landfill site (which is the property in discussion) as well as the farmers field to the north and McGregor Avenue right of way is City owned property, the lower soccer fields to the south is private property.

Ok, thanks for the info. I’m aware that the properties on either side of this strip are privately owned but was surprised to see someone living on what I thought was city land. I wasn’t particularly interested in walking on the old landfill site but rather crossing it to access the treed area to the east. I believe this is city land and is used by local mountain bikers. I find Brandon has very limited green space and I was looking for somewhere to hike that was close by and not privately owned. The Riverbank Discovery Trails are nice but there’s only so many times a person can walk those same loops, lol. Thanks again for the info. I will likely just avoid the area so as not to disturb the individual living there.

Read a little slower. He said the land that the person is on is city owned. He then for whatever reason mentioned the BYSA fields are private. Two different pieces of property.

He has been there for many years. I remember going up there to check on him during the Brandon flood of 2011.
