I am just wondering if anyone has advice on how to pay for a funeral when they have no insurances or income, all they have is CPP. My mother in law is losing her battle with cancer and we just found out now that she and her husband both have nothing to prepare for this. They are not in a good place financially and my husband and I just had a baby so we can’t financially foot the bill. They are in a full time care home and they (in-laws) told us that EIA won’t help them since they are in a care home. Any advice would help! Thanks

For my mother in law (also resided in a care home) and EIA paid for her cremation. Just had to bring in her will and statements showing her account balances. She did not have anything other than CPP & OAS. I don’t think they will pay for actual funeral service though. Hope this helps.

I think I only had to take her certificate of death and bank statements,can’t remember for sure.

Not sure of what you would want for service but here’s an option.  
My friend used a cremation service out of Winnipeg no service . They helped her with everything see link. She supplied her own Urn. Had a private family get together to share memories and say goodbye . They kept their Moms Urn and will do a scattering with their Dads when he passes in the future.  
The CPP payout or death benefit basically covered the whole service.

I know there is government money to be gotten, I don't thing everyone qualifies tho.  
This is what I found on googled...  
Who is eligible for the $2,500 death benefit?  
Can I use funds from the Canada Pension Plan to pay for a funeral?  
The one-time payment of $2,500 that is made to a surviving spouse or children can be used to pay for a person's funeral.

Under half price of any where in Brandon and that i:ncluded paying mileage for them to come to Brandon.

When my mom passed government gave 2,500. It helps. Just keep funeral basic.
